ACC football recruiting: Florida State, Clemson, Miami host stars

Clemson Tigers

Clemson lost a lot on offense to the draft, including Sammy Watkins and Tajh Boyd, but the Tigers are replenishing in a major way. Over the weekend, they added four-star receiver Trevion Thompson, of Durham (N.C.) Hillside.

Combined with the top dual-threat quarterback in the country in Deshaun Watson, Clemson's offense could again be scary good in a year or two.

Clemson is also still in on Andrew Williams, the four-star defensive end who visited Auburn over the weekend. Williams still has visits remaining to Ole Miss and Clemson, but I believe Auburn is in a good position to sign him.

Florida St. Seminoles

Florida State is one of the hottest recruiting teams in the country. With multiple top targets remaining, and several other commitments looking around, the finish for this group will be one of the most interesting in the country.

Florida State hosted two five-stars over the weekend in cornerback Marlon Humphrey, of Alabama, and defensive tackle Malik McDowell, of Michigan.

Humphrey has long been impressed with Jameis Winston, a fellow Alabama product who chose FSU, and with Florida State's track program. But a main connection of his to Florida State was defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, who left for the same position at Georgia last week.

Florida State feels that Humphrey's visit went well, and that it still has a solid shot at him despite Pruitt's departure. But it is difficult to tell how much of that optimism is based on almost all prospects giving FSU good feedback coming off a national title. I have always believed Humphrey would end up in Tuscaloosa, and Pruitt leaving only strengthened that belief.

That said, Humphrey is a bit of a different kid, and he's very independent. It would not be the biggest recruiting shock ever if he picked Florida State.

There is more info on McDowell's recruitment.

ESPN: FSU makes move for No. 5 DT McDowell ($): McDowell's father spoke with ESPN.

"He's getting to meet some of the players and talking with the coaches and seeing the campus, and they went on a tour of the academic facilities and weight room," Greg said. "He got to see the whole atmosphere and the environment himself."

He also spoke with 247Sports' Steve Wiltfong ($).

"Just the way it feels with the coaches, and he likes the team and everything about Florida State. He likes the overall school and everything down there. A great academic school. Got a good feel for the players down there and he got to meet with all the coaches. He talked with Coach (Jimbo) Fisher and he has a great relationship with Coach (Tim) Brewster and Coach (Odell) Haggins, and they've been giving him a lot of insight and saying he has a chance to compete as a freshman for a lot of time and I think that's big for him."

Sources tell me that Florida State feels about as good about its chances with McDowell as it can about a prospect who lives so far away. This is a complicated recruitment. McDowell will go to either LSU or Michigan State this coming weekend, and on the final weekend in January, he will see Ohio State. And the Wolverines are still in the picture as well. FSU does have a remaining need at defensive tackle.

Florida State is still also heavily pursuing four-star Derrick Nnadi, of Virginia Beach. Virginia Tech seems to be the top competition for Nnadi, a top-10 defensive tackle, but FSU did make a good impression on his visit in early December. His trip to Virginia Tech this coming weekend will be a major one to watch.

Speaking of Virginia Tech and Florida State, the Seminoles hosted four-star receiver Javon Harrison, of Lakeland (Fla.) Kathleen. Florida State believes it can flip Harrison, who remains committed to Virginia Tech and will visit Blacksburg this coming weekend.

Chris Nee spoke with Harrison ($).

"I was impressed," Harrison said. "It was a good visit. It was nice. I liked it up there."

I dropped some recruiting information on Florida State QB/athlete commitment Treon Harris and FSU cornerback target J.C. Jackson (Florida commitment) in the SEC recruiting recap. Notes on receiver target Malachi Dupre are also there.

Louisville Cardinals

Louisville's class has been falling apart since Charlie Strong left for the Texas job, and it is currently without a single composite four-star recruit. That won't get it done in a division with Clemson and Florida State.

But the new staff did host Ohio four-star defensive tackle Daniel Cage over the weekend. He spoke with Mike Hughes about the trip ($).

"They're still in the same boat as before I went down there," Cage said. "I'm still considering them but I've got other colleges to think about too. I've got to see how I fit in with some other programs. (Louisville) is in the same boat as everybody else."

I still expect Cage to select Michigan State, but that he made the trip and came away impressed is a good sign for Louisville. A visit to Notre Dame is also on deck.

Louisville will see a bump from moving to the ACC, but this might not be that year with Charlie Strong leaving late in the game.

Miami Hurricanes

Miami didn't officially host any major commitments over the weekend, but Cameron Underwood of State of The U told me that former Miami commitment Travonte Valentine, the tremendous defensive tackle recruit, did stop by for an unofficial visit to hang out with some of the current players. Valentine seems to be torn between LSU and Miami, and this will be an interesting fight until National Signing Day as both programs have major needs at defensive tackle. Valentine will visit LSU and Miami on successive weekends, with the Hurricanes getting the final visit before National Signing Day.

Here is an excellent recap of Miami's recent recruiting developments.
