On C.J. Worton, FSU and Florida

The word making the rounds in recruiting circles is that FSU either has dropped or is dropping commitment C.J. Worton in the very near future. Worton, an underrated three-star receiver recruit from Homstead (Fla.) South Dade, visited West Virginia and Florida in recent weekends, and while on his visit to Florida, tweeted at FSU five-star receiver commitment Travis Rudolph, to ask if he was going to visit Florida, as had been rumored.

I cannot confirm that FSU has dropped Worton, though I strongly suspect that will be the case. I do know that FSU was very displeased with Worton's tweet at Rudolph, even if it was simply asking his fellow recruit if he is going to visit.

It is possible to overplay one's hand as a recruit, and if FSU does indeed drop Worton, I think that is essentially what may have happened. FSU just won the national title and top recruits are beating down its door to come play. The Seminoles need some certainty. It's one thing for a superstar recruit to look around and play the recruiting game. But for a kid like Worton, who has been committed for many months, to do so may have been a reach. If a three-star wants to get in Florida State's class, he needs to be solid, because FSU is currently chasing almost nothing but five-stars, like Ermon Lane and Malachi Dupre, both of Worton's position.

We will see what happens on this. Worton has not said anything publicly, and FSU cannot say anything about this on the record as schools cannot comment on recruits.

I do know that timing matters in this. Worton is supposed to visit FSU this coming weekend. If FSU has or is dropping him, it needs to happen quickly, so that his family members don't request off work, buy plane tickets, etc.
