Da'Vante Phillips is a highly touted receiver in the class of 2015.
Phillips, out of Miami Central High School, stands 6'1½ and weighs in at 197 pounds. As of June, he's rated as a consensus four-star prospect by 247Sports, Rivals, Scout and ESPN. The 247Sports Composite, a compilation of data from the four major recruiting services, list him as the 74th-best player in America, the ninth-best wide receiver and the 15th-best player from the state of Florida.
Phillips is getting interest from several top programs in the Southeast. He holds scholarship offers from Florida State, Miami, Alabama, Clemson, Tennessee, Florida, South Florida and UCF.
Why does Phillips have so many top offers? There are a multitude of reasons.
First, Phillips already has very close to college-ready size.
Phillips has decent speed, but is not a burner or a track guy. Speed really is not his game. But he makes up for that in other areas.
Notably, Phillips is fairly quick in and out of his breaks for a player of his size. He is a very strong player, capable of getting off the press. And he is not afraid to go over the middle and take a beating.
What makes Phillips a highly rated prospect, however, is his ability to come down the football. It starts with hands that are extremely strong and sure. Phillips tracks the ball well and rarely drops it. Phillips combines those hands with excellent body control, adjusting to poorly-thrown balls. And Phillips is also adept at going up to get the ball with good vertical leaping skills.
Phillips projects as a go-to target for first downs and in the red zone, but is not necessarily guaranteed to be a big play threat at the BCS level. I feel confident in saying he is a four-star type and one of the 15 best in the country.
