This is our best estimate on who will redshirt for Florida State given the available evidence.
Florida State signed another excellent recruiting class in 2014. All qualified, and now it is time to start looking at who will play, and who will take a redshirt year to pack on muscle and refine skills. Florida State has played 45 percent of its freshmen over the last three signing classes. This page will be updated weekly with our current projections of who will redshirt from the 2014 class.
Expected to play
- RB Dalvin Cook: Cook was an early-enrollee and has been extremely impressive. He is the No. 3 tailback.
- RB Jonathan Vickers: Jimbo Fisher's Seminoles rarely shirt skill players, but Vickers is the No. 2 fullback and plays on special teams as well.
- LS Stephen Gabbard: Gabbard is competing for Florida State's long-snapper position.
- WR Ermon Lane: Florida State rarely redshirts skill position players under Jimbo Fisher and Lane has showed promise in camp.
- WR Travis Rudolph: Florida State rarely redshirts skill position players and he has been one of the best freshmen receivers in a while when healthy.
- WR Ja'Vonn Harrison: Harrison will likely avoid a redshirt and should also get some burn on special teams. He is physically ready. 9/29: Harrison played against The Citadel and Clemson.
- OL Roderick Johnson: Our Florida State sources are very happy with the early returns from the 6'7, 333-pounder. Most of the freshmen linemen will shirt, but Johnson is a good bet to avoid that. 9/29: Johnson played against Citadel but not in FSU's other three games. We are leaving him in the "not redshirting" category for now, but he may be moved soon.
- LB/DE Jacob Pugh: Pugh is one of the top reserves for the hybrid end/linebacker position and is physically ready to play at 235+ pounds.
- DE Lorenzo Featherston: Featherston has world of potential, but needs to add a very big amount of muscle. There is some upside as a pass rusher right now.
- DT Derrick Nnadi: Nnadi might be the No. 2 nose guard when all is said and done.
- DT Demarcus Christmas: Christmas is expected to play some non-blowout time snaps for the Seminoles.
- S Trey Marshall: Marshall enrolled early, has bounced back extremely well from an injury suffered in high school, and has showed his athleticism in practice. He'll be a reserve on defense and contribute on special teams.
Projected to redshirt
- QB J.J. Cosentino: Cosentino has some excellent physical tools, but he's quite raw. Florida State has two quarterbacks ahead of him in Winston and Maguire, and John Franklin III can take third-team reps if necessary, though he is playing receiver more often.
- OL Corey Martinez: looks like a promising line prospect, but Florida State has a pretty clear first and second string established.
- OL Alec Eberle: looks like a promising line prospect, but Florida State has a pretty clear first and second string established.
- OL Brock Ruble: looks like a promising line prospect, but Florida State has a pretty clear first and second string established.
- OL Derrick Kelly: looks like a promising line prospect, but Florida State has a pretty clear first and second string established.
- TE Mavin Saunders: Saunders is an athletic freak, but is unrefined, particularly with his blocking.
- TE Ryan Izzo: Izzo is more refined than Saunders, but not as athletic. There's a chance that one of the freshmen tight ends doesn't redshirt. 9/29 Update: Played snaps according to the participation report released by Florida State against Oklahoma State (we did not spot him), but has not played in the last three games.
- DE Rick Leonard: Leonard had an up-and-down fall camp, with some flashes of potential and some typical freshman moments. He may very well avoid a redshirt and play a good bit in mop-up duty. 9/29 update: Leonard played snaps on defense against Citadel, but did not play against Oklahoma State, Clemson or NC State. He could be headed for a medical RS.
- DT Arthur Williams: Very athletic and strong, but equally as unrefined in his technique.
- DT Fred Jones: Needs significant development.
- DL Adam Torres: Torres could stand to get bigger.
- LB Kain Daub: Florida State typically finds a spot for its young linebackers, including special teams, but FSU does have nine on scholarship for 2014, so avoiding a redshirt is not necessarily guaranteed. 9/7 update: Daub has a broken toe and will miss some time. He appears headed for a redshirt at this point.
- LB Delvin Purifoy: Florida State typically finds a spot for its young linebackers, including special teams, but FSU does have nine on scholarship for 2014, so avoiding a redshirt is not necessarily guaranteed. Update 8/26: Purifoy dislocated his ankle and has a slight break in the tibia. He will miss the year.
- DB Malique Jackson: Jackson has shown some promising athleticism, but as a high school quarterback, he's pretty raw at corner and there are a lot of players in front of him.
