Dwayne Haskins has over 40 offers and plenty of options.
BRADENTON, Fla. -- Dwayne Haskins is one of the top quarterback recruits in the country. Out of Potomac (Md.) The Bullis School, the 6'3, 200-pounder holds more than 40 scholarship offers and is rated a four-star by the 247Sports Composite ratings. SB Nation recruiting caught up with Haskins at the IMG NFA 7v7 Southeastern Championship Saturday to update his recruitment.
"I came out here to compete with my team and work on my ball placement and accuracy," Haskins said.
Schools standing out
Haskins did not name any specific favorites, but did name many schools with whom he has a good relationship, including Maryland, Notre Dame, Rutgers, Florida, Penn State, Ohio State and LSU.
Haskins said that he understands the pitch of staying home and taking Maryland to the next level, but that "some people do and do not want to." Haskins is a huge priority for Maryland and keeping him home would be a major win not only because of his talent, but also because he could likely persuade other local elite players to follow him and sign with the Terrapins.
Seeing Florida
Haskins' 7v7 team (Pro Performance) from the DC area flew into Orlando and stopped off in Gainesville before heading down to the tournament. Haskins is a top QB target for the Gators, who did not sign a QB in the 2015 cycle and have relatively little depth at the position. Florida made sure he was aware of the opportunity for playing early and that one of the current quarterbacks on the roster transferring is a very real possibility.
While on campus, Haskins got to see UF practice under offensive coordinator/QB coach Doug Nussmeier, with whom he was familiar thanks to Nussmeier's time at Michigan, which is also recruiting Haskins. Florida is also pitching the pro-style offense angle to Haskins, and the QB prefers that style. Haskins wants to further the relationship with coach Jim McElwain.
Timetable and visits
Haskins wants to make his decision in May or June, and should have a narrowed list before then. He expects Notre Dame, Maryland and Rutgers to make the cut.
But before that, he wants to take even more visits to schools to make sure he is making the right decision. Haskins told SB Nation he plans to get back to Florida for its spring game because the recent visit was not a prolonged one.
"It was a great visit, I can't wait to go back," Haskins said.
He plans to visit Alabama, a school his friend and fellow four-star Trevon Diggs really likes, as well as LSU and Oklahoma. Haskins does want to visit Notre Dame and Rutgers again, but does not know if that will happen.
Trojans?
The one school from which Haskins has not heard but would like to? USC, which recently missed out on QB recruit K.J. Costello.
Fatherly advice
Haskins' makes sure to take his dad with him on all his college visits because "he has a lot of wisdom," and relies on his father's advice.
Future
Haskins plans to study journalism or perhaps business. He does not plan to be a recruiting reporter.
Note: Gusts of wind knocked over scorer's tables and blew laptops off benches on Day 1 of the tournament. It also made life difficult on microphones, so parts of the interview with Haskins were not included due to inaudibility issues.
