Putting the Jimbo to Auburn rumors to rest

Auburn hired Gus Malzahn, which as I wrote about last week, was a very smart hire. Tennessee appears to be on the verge of snagging Charlie Strong, though another run at Fisher is not out of the question.

As I wrote more than two weeks ago, I never could see Jimbo Fisher taking the Auburn or Tennessee job. Even considering the potentially substantial bump in pay that both schools did offer to Fisher (Auburn twice, in fact, including Monday night), they are simply not better jobs than Florida State. Auburn is, at best, the fourth job in its own division, with Tennessee the third in the east. Again, that's in division, not conference.

Ira Schoffel of the Tallahassee Democrat reports that Fisher and the administration are in contract talks. That was expected. I've also been told that despite his agent being Jimmy Sexton, Florida State is not expected to be duped into giving Fisher a large raise. Some raise should be expected, but Florida State is not expected to give in with big money, nor is it expected to raise Fisher's buyout to an enormous amount.

I'm told that Florida State's position is that it finally raised the money for the indoor practice facility, and will soon have the freshman dorm as well. Fisher pushed extremely hard for these items and helped FSU to realize how behind the times it was on some of the "commitment to football" issues it had when he took over.

Basically, this is like getting a really nice present for a report card and then having to realize that Santa won't be able to double down two weeks later on something big as well.
