Five-star defensive end Marlon Davidson committed to Auburn over Alabama Friday at a ceremony at his high school. Out of Greenville (Ala.), Davidson also listed Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Florida State and Clemson to round out his seven finalists, but elite players from Alabama rarely leave the state when both the Tigers and Tide are after them.
What makes Davidson a 5-star recruit?
It's his blend of power and quickness with his 6'3, 260-pound frame. Davidson is more of a strong-side defensive end, capable of shutting down the run game using good leverage. He does not have the longest arms, but is active with his heavy hands. Davidson is not a prototypical pass rushing type, but is plenty capable of impacting the passer, he also finds the football well and has an excellent motor. Davidson is rated as the No. 2 strong-side defensive end in the country.
Why it was Auburn
Davidson is a quiet kid who values family, and his brother, Kenneth Carter, played for Auburn from 2010-13 and is now on staff with the Tigers. I believe that he trusts Carter when Carter tells him that Auburn will take care of him and have his best interests at heart, perhaps more than he believes recruiters at other schools. He has also visited Auburn at least three times in the last five months, creating even more familiarity, and Auburn is only 90 minutes from Greenville. Plus, Auburn certainly has a need for defensive ends, with a more attractive depth chart than in-state rival Alabama.
