Tom D'Angelo of the Palm Beach Post thinks there is a chance Randy Shannon will be Florida State's next defensive coordinator.
I don't believe Randy Shannon will be the next DC.
There's a simple reason for this. Jimbo Fisher's offenses have routinely ripped defenses run directly by Shannon or under Shannon's direction (see note below). Here are five such instances.
In 2005, Fisher's LSU offense hung 40 points on Miami's defense in the Peach Bowl. 468 yards on 78 plays (an even 6.0/play). That 2005 defense had a good many NFL players on it.
Games from 2007-2010 feature Shannon as a head coach and not a DC, but as a defensive coach, the defenses his teams produce reflect heavily on him.
In 2007, Fisher's Florida State offense, which wasn't any good in his first year, managed only 4.6 yards/play against the Hurricanes, thanks in part to a 14-32 passing performance from Xavier Lee. FSU scored 29, but only 22 points were from the offense.
In 2008, Fisher's offense hung 41 points on Miami's defense, on the strength of 440 yards and 85 plays, thoroughly controlling the clock and keeping Miami's offense off the field. This was the youngest offensive line in college football.
In 2009, Fisher's offense put up 27 points and 404 yards on 5.7/play against Shannon's defense which was otherwise excellent that season.
And in 2010, Fisher's offense put up 45 points in Miami on the strength of 471 yards and a huge 7.6 yards/play.
Why on earth would Fisher respect Shannon as a coach. In several of these instances, Miami's defense had far more talent than FSU's offense, yet was torn up.
As a position coach? I could see it happening. As a defensive coordinator? It seems really, really unlikely. I've also not heard the name mentioned as a DC from any source I trust.
