Plenty of five-star talent remains on the table, and it just so happens that most of it is on defense
National Signing Day is less than 50 off, and classes are filling up. Plenty of highly-rated prospects are yet to commit, so with four, here are the top 10 uncommitted prospects in the country, per the 247Sports Composite rankings.
Rashan Gary, DT, Paramus (N.J.) Catholic
The first school the 6'4, 290-pounder (who can run a 4.74 40) mentioned when I interviewed him in 2014 was Alabama, and the Tide have been on this Garden State prospect for a long time. Other SEC schools like Georgia and Auburn, as well as ACC school Clemson are trying to get in the mix. Ole Miss has done a great job working on he and his mother as well, and I'm told they are close with Ole Miss offensive tackle commit Greg Little.
But my pick for the country's No. 1 overall recruit is Michigan. Gary's former coach Chris Partridge is the new director of recruiting operations, and two former teammates of Gary's, Jabrill Peppers and Juwann Bushell-Beatty, are also in Ann Arbor.
Derrick Brown, DT, Buford (Ga.) Lanier
The country's No. 4 overall prospect told SB Nation this spring that Georgia was his leader, and I am hard-pressed to even think of which team should be No. 2. Brown going anywhere other than UGA would be a huge shocker. Georgia seems on track to keep a large majority of the state's top prospects home.
Isaac Nauta, TE, Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy
The nation's top tight end is back on the market after decommitting from Florida State. Originally from Buford (Ga.) High School, I expect Nauta to stay home and pick Georgia over Michigan and Alabama.
Oluwole Betiku, DE, Gardena (Calif.) Junipero Serra
Since decommitting from UCLA, the elite defensive end has made trips to Florida State and Texas A&M, and has been speaking with USC. I can't see Betiku going across the country to play for FSU and the coaching situation at A&M is quite uncertain. The top bet for a Serra HS star is always USC, and that's the pick here.
Ben Davis, LB, Gordo (Ala.)
The No. 1 inside linebacker in the country is an Alabama legacy, the son of Wayne Davis, who was the leading tackler in Crimson Tide history. The pick is easy: Alabama.
Lyndell Wilson, OLB, Montgomery (Ala.) Carver
Alabama. The country's top linebacker spoke glowingly of Alabama when I interviewed him this spring. Florida has done a great job recruiting Wilson, and he has visited Florida several times and speaks glowingly of the Gators, but it's so difficult to pull elite talents out of Alabama. Georgia might have a shot, too, thanks to hiring Kirby Smart, but I still believe the Tide has the best shot.
Wilson is an extremely athletic player at 6'2 and 220 pounds. He strikes down running backs and also shows some ability as a pass rusher and in coverage playing for powerhouse Carver.
Brandon Jones, S, Nacogdoches (Texas)
Jones is one of the best playmaking safeties in the country. I'm picking Texas A&M for the East Texas product because he's visited the school so many times and despite troubles at A&M, the Aggies still recruit that part of the state very well. If there's a dark horse, it's Charlie Strong's Texas Longhorns, though that staff also enters the season on the hot seat. It seems likely that Jones is going to be choosing a school with a coaching staff on the hot seat.
Mique Juarez, LB, Torrance (Calif.) North
Juarez decommitted from USC in October after the firing of Steve Sarkisian, but USC folks are confident they can get him back by hiring a good coach. I really have no lean here. It could be USC, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, UCLA or Washington.
Mecole Hardman Jr., ATH, Elberton (Ga.) County
Hardman is one of the most explosive athletes in the country, capable of excelling at receiver or cornerback. I think Kirby Smart will be able to keep the talented athlete home for UGA, but Georgia fans can't be comfortable with Alabama's recent uptick in interest.
Rashard Lawrence, DT, Monroe (La.) Neville
A defensive tackle from Louisiana who LSU wanted the entire time? LSU is the pick, but Alabama is just about the only team able to consistently grab elite prospects away from the Tigers, and they are involved as well. Lawrence is incredibly quick and has decent size, capable of playing three- or five-technique.
