Earlier Tuesday, it was reported that Eddie Gran will not return as Florida State's running back coach. As far as running back coaches go, that's a very big loss. Gran is highly regarded both as a coach and as a recruiter. He is considering the head coaching position at Arkansas State and the offensive coordinator role at Cincinnati, with new head coach Tommy Tubberville, under whom he coached for about a decade previously.

So who will FSU pursue? How about Larry Porter?

Porter is considered an excellent recruiter, and running back coach is often a spot where ace recruiters are stashed on staff.

Plus, Porter and Fisher were at LSU together in 2005 and 2006. And at the time Fisher took over Florida State as OC (2007), it was rumored that Fisher wanted t hire Porter, but could not afford to pry him away from LSU in 2007, and in 2010 when Fisher took over as head coach, Porter accepted the head coaching position at Memphis.

After a horrible stint as head coach of Memphis, Porter is now the running back coach at Arizona State. Porter is a Southern man,and his recruiting is probably most effective in the South.

This move seems to make sense on the surface for quite a few reasons. We'll see if it happens.
