Tomahawk Nation has learned that Billy Napier may soon join the Florida State coaching staff.
Napier, 32, the former offensive coordinator of the Clemson Tigers and current offensive coach with the Colorado State Rams under head coach Jim McElwain (former Alabama offensive coordinator), is considered a good recruiter and a hard worker. Napier followed McElwain from Alabama to Colorado State, after the pair spent a year together in Tuscaloosa. Napier was a quality control assistant for the Tide.
Napier fits the mold that Jimbo Fisher is looking for. What mold, you ask? Having worked with Nick Saban, apparently.
Clemson insiders say that Napier and Tigers' head coach Dabo Swinney had a difficult relationship at times, with Swinney's meddling with Napier's playcalling and coordinating of the offense as a primary cause. Napier prefers a smashmouth, pro-style approach, while Swinney prefers more of a spread concept.
It's yet to be determined what position Napier would coach for the Seminoles. He could fill the vacant QB coach position, or current tight ends coach/offensive coordinator James Coley could shift to the role, allowing Napier to coach tight ends.
Napier turns 33 in September, is from Georgia, and attended college in South Carolina at Furman.
