James Coley has left the offensive coordinator position at Florida State for the same job with the Miami Hurricanes -- at least in title.
At Florida State, he was the QB coach and offensive coordinator, but did not call plays, as head coach Jimbo Fisher retained control of the offense. Coley has been at Florida State since 2008, and held the offensive coordinator title for the last three seasons.
This year, Florida State's offense ranked 25th nationally, while Miami's was 39th.
At Miami, he will call plays and is expected to have control of the offense.
Coley has one year of playcalling experience, at FIU in 2007, and the Golden Panther offense was one of the worst in the entire country. One can argue, however, that it had a lot to do with FIU's lack of talent.
Coley prefers to run more of an up-tempo, spread-based attack. It will be interesting to see how his preferences mesh with those of Miami head coach Al Golden.
What he is most well known for, however, is his recruiting. A Miami native, Coley has great connections with high school coaches in the area and should provide an immediate boost for the Hurricanes on the recruiting trail.
It is not yet known where Florida State will turn for its new offensive coordinator. The Seminoles could bring in someone from outside the program, or could promote from within and then bring in a coach from outside the program to fill the position coach vacancy.
