Receiver recruits shine at Orlando, Miami Nike Football Training Camps

Over the weekend, I had the chance to cover the Orlando and Miami Nike Football Training Camps (NFTC) at West Orange High School and Barry University, respectively. Here are some of the best receivers from the weekend.

In an event with more than 500 participants, some are sure to be left off the list. A player's absence from this list does not mean he had a poor event or is not a good football player. The two days were quite loaded, and more than 20 BCS receiver-type prospects showed out.

Artavis Scott and George Campbell, of Tampa (Fla.) East Lake High School, both had strong performances in Orlando.

Scott has tremendous quickness, decent speed and is extremely strong for his size. Campbell is the rare long-strider with great top-end speed who does not need a long time to get there. Campbell does need to work on becoming a more natural pass catcher. Both players are among the best in the country, and Campbell is actually in the class of 2015.

The hometown player was Garrett Johnson, of West Orange High School. Johnson is very quick, and could be a good slot receiver at the BCS level. He holds offers from several BCS schools, including Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Boston College and Arizona. Johnson was excited about the Arizona offer, which is fairly recent.

If I didn't know that Keith Gavin, of Crawfordville (Fla.) Wakulla High School was in the class of 2016, I would have thought he was a high school senior. The 6'1, 170-pounder competed strongly against players a year or two older. He already holds an offer from Clemson, and could be a national recruit when all is said and done.

Devonaire Clarington (who is erroneously listed as Devonaire Scott by some recruiting services) has been on my radar for about a year, after seeing the Miami (Fla.) Southridge tight end in the summer of 2012. Clarington, a 6'5, 235-pound class of 2015 star who can jump out of the gym, has added good weight and now weighs in at about 230 pounds. He caught the ball well, changed directions as well as some big receivers and showed why he has early offers from Alabama, Florida State, Miami, Michigan and Illinois. Clarington should hold offers from every major BCS school before all is said and done. He will be a national recruit.

Ryan Sousa of Orlando (Fla.) Lake Nona High School is really smooth. The 5'11, 180-pounder has a real feel for the position and knows how to set up defenders by varying his pace and running sharp routes. He also caught the ball well. Sousa currently holds 10 BCS offers, and could see that number double.

Jovon Durante is a classic South Florida receiver with excellent quickness, and has been making plays for quite a while. Durante holds an offer from FIU, and the 5'10, 170-pound speedster will pick up many more, as he is in the class of 2015 and has plenty of time.

Corey Holmes, of Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas, won the top SPARQ combine score in Miami on Sunday, and looked good in drills as well. Holmes continues to improve as a player, and claims offers from Miami, Michigan, Notre Dame, Arkansas, Florida, Florida State, Maryland, Oklahoma, Rutgers, South Carolina, Syracuse, Tennessee, UCLA, Vanderbilt, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Shawn Burgess-Becker (who also appears on some sources without the "Becker" tag) also emerged as a star in the class of 2015. So impressive was the Pompano Beach (Fla.) Monarch star that Alabama elected to extend an offer. The 6'1, 175-pound receiver showed strong hands, explosive movements and good body control. He also plays safety, and I'd feel very comfortable rating him as a four-star at this early juncture.

Jakari Lockett, of Miami (Fla.) Booker T. Washington High School, also showed out. Lockett, the son of new USF running back coach Telly Lockett, still has room to fill out at 6'2 and 170, but definitely has potential. He has improved a lot since I saw him last summer.

Da'Vante Phillips has been on the radar of those who follow recruiting in this state since he stepped on the campus of Miami (Fla.) Central High School in August of 2011. Phillips, whom analyst Chris Nee nicknamed "Baby Blackmon" in 2011 for his strength and explosiveness, showed very strong hands, and I was impressed by the flexibility shown by the 6'1.5", 190-pound 2015 recruit. Phillips holds offers from several major SEC schools.

Jimmy Bayes impressed from the tight end position. Out of Immokalee, the 6'4, 190-pound Bayes has long arms and a frame to add more weight. He moved better than I expected when I first looked at his build. Bayes is committed to USF and also plays defensive end.

Johnnie Dixon, out of Palm Beach Gardens (Fla.) Dwyer High School, was excellent as expected. The 5'10, 185-pounder has very good strength for his size, and is as explosive as ever. He currently holds offers from Florida, Miami, Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Kentucky, Louisville, N.C. State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Ole Miss, USF, Tennessee, Washington State and West Virginia.

Jacob McCrary of Miami (Fla.) Coral Reef High School did not blow me away, but I've seen him numerous times and know he is a good player. Here is my scouting report of the 6'0, 170-pound Clemson commitment.

Travis Rudolph has the ability to be an excellent corner but, on Sunday in Miami, he shined at receiver. The 6'1, 185-pound playmaker was just that, as he repeatedly gained separation from corners and caught the football pretty well. Rudolph recently decommitted from Miami, and holds 15 BCS offers.

George Rushing did not have a tremendous day, but did make a few splash plays. The Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) Cardinal Gibbons 6'1, 180-pound receiver should end up with more than the single BCS offer he currently claims.

Tyre Brady is another receiver who should probably have more offers than he does. Brady lacks explosiveness, but does have good size at 6'3, 187, and the frame to be a big, strong receiver. He caught the ball well Sunday.

Kaian Duverger is a really intriguing prospect out of John L. Leonard High School in Greenacres, Fla. Duverger, assuming he has grades, is about to add quite a few offers. He does not have elite speed, but is tall at 6'4, has the frame to get bigger than his listed weight of 170 pounds and has a huge wingspan that creates an easy target for quarterbacks. Duverger had one very impressive rep in which he skied over the defender and extended his long arms to bring in a pass that looked to be way overthrown.

Other notables

JoJo Robinson, of Miami (Fla.) Northwestern High School, looked pretty good as well, as did Orlando (Fla.) Dr. Phillips High School's Roderick Proctor. Trevon Lee and Trequan Smith were also solid.
