Mike Johnson is one of the better defensive backs in Florida for the class of 2014. Out of Clearwater (Fla.) Countryside High School, Johnson currently claims offers from Florida State, Louisville, Texas Tech, Vanderbilt and Virginia, plus a handful of Big East offers. Johnson stands 5'11 and 175 pounds and is rated as a three-star recruit.

I caught up with Johnson at the IMG 7-on-7 Southeast Championships.

"7-on-7 helps me with my footwork and transitioning into deep balls," Johnson said of the summer sport.

The talented corner picked up two offers of late.

"Vanderbilt and Texas Tech offered me recently," Johnson said. "I've been talking to a coach from Texas Tech. I forgot his name, but he seems really cool. He's telling me how they're trying to recruit more in Florida."

He also took two recent visits.

"I went to Florida State and Louisville," Johnson said of his recent visits.

"I loved Florida State. I loved the campus and the coaches. I had the experience to meet the coaches and some of the players," Johnson said. "I met Keelin Smith, Reggie Northrup and the quarterback, Jameis Winston."

Florida State is recruiting Johnson as a cornerback (some schools prefer him at safety). "They said they need corners and need corners to commit," Johnson said.

"I love the Cardinals. I love coach Charley Strong," Johnson said of Louisville. "I like the coaches and how they interact with the players. It's like a big family."

And there is yet another in-state school in which Johnson has interest.

"I've always loved Miami. I plan to visit them maybe at the end of the month," he said of the Hurricanes.

Johnson doesn't have a date for his decision, but rather says that he will commit when he feels one school is right for him. He lists academics, family atmosphere and the campus as important factors, and says that distance from home will not play into his decision.
