Herschel Walker's nephew is a good looking tight end recruit.
The recent Orlando Nike Football Training Camp (NFTC) was loaded with top prospects, including many from the class of 2014. One of those underclassmen was tight end recruit Milan Richard, of Savannah (Ga.) Calvary Day School. Calvary is a small school in Georgia's 1A football classification, but it has produced top recruits before, including former Georgia Bulldog Demarcus Dobbs.
Richard measured in at 6'2.5" inches and 227 pounds at the NFTC. I noticed Richard almost immediately, and was quickly informed by another recruiting analyst that Richard was the nephew of Georgia great Herschel Walker. Richard has excellent size for the tight end position, and is 16 years old, meaning that he is now one of those 18-year-old junior types.
SB Nation recruiting caught up with Richard Monday night to discuss his recruitment. In addition to tight end, Richard also plays defensive end and is open to doing so at the next level.
"I can't be picky about what position I play or if I play in a spread or pro-style offense. If I get double digit offers, that could change," Richard said.
And despite a lack of offers to date, Richard is hearing from some big programs.
"I've heard from Georgia, Georgia Tech, LSU, Purdue, Oregon and Mississippi State. Air Force and Georgia Tech stopped by Monday," Richard said.
As for that Georgia connection, Richard did grow up a fan of the Bulldogs, but his uncle doesn't push Georgia on him too much.
"But my growing up a fan of Georgia has nothing to do with my recruitment," Richard said.
Calvary's spring starts May 7, and after spring ball ends Richard plans to attend the Football University camp in Atlanta, and will also attend Georgia's camp in June. He will also try to make it to Georgia's junior day.
In the meantime, Richard is focusing on improving his game.
"I am working on my footwork everyday to get in and out of cuts," Richard said. It is refreshing to see a recruit realize what he must improve in his game. Richard's footwork does indeed need work. He's high cut, and more fast than quick. Seeing that tight ends rarely run 40 yards, being quick and getting open in small spaces is more important. Richard's stock will rise as his feet continue to improve.
Richard has a 3.1 GPA and will take the SAT in June. SB Nation will be sure to catch up with Richard during his senior season.
