The Miami Hurricanes are off to an excellent start with their 2014 football recruiting class. Much of the potential threat of additional NCAA sanctions stemming from the Nevin Shapiro scandal has been blunted, as the NCAA badly flubbed the investigation. Al Golden and his staff are now in Year 3, and their relationships in South Florida seem to be improving, particularly with the addition of offensive coordinator James Coley, a Miami native who came to the Coral Gables from Florida State.

Kc McDermott, Palm Beach (Fla.) Central High School: McDermott is one of the elite offensive line recruits in the country. Both of his older brothers played college football, and he'll carry on their legacy at Miami. The coaching and tips he has received from them show in his game, and he is quite technically sound. McDermott might not have the highest ceiling in the class, but he probably has the highest floor. At 6'6 and 285 pounds and just 16 years old, McDermott could grow into a very good college tackle and be a multi-year starter for the Hurricanes, who he chose over 40 other BCS offers. McDermott is a consensus five-star recruit.
Joseph Yearby, Miami (Fla.) Central High School: Yearby is one of the best running backs in the country. He's not big, and doesn't have elite speed, but there are plenty of reasons why he is deserving of a five-star ranking.
Trevor Darling, Miami (Fla.) Central High School: Miami is fortunate to have two top-end offensive tackle recruits in its 2014 class, and while Darling is not on McDermott's level, he's not far off. Reilly Gibbons, St. Petersburg (Fla.) Catholic: Gibbons is a developmental offensive tackle recruit. He has good athleticism at 6'6 and 275 pounds, and should be able to contribute by 2016, if not a year earlier. Gibbons is a consensus three-star recruit and is close to being a consensus four-star.
Alin Edouard, Hialeah (Fla.) High School: Edouard is a solid three-star quarterback prospect out of South Florida. While listed at 6'1 and 180 pounds, Edouard is considered one of the top-30 quarterback recruits nationally.
Dalvon Stuckey, Mississippi Pearl River C.C.: Stuckey is a JUCO defensive tackle -- a position the Hurricanes need to fill in the worst way. He initially signed with Florida State two years ago out of high school, but did not qualify. If he has his grades in order this time around, Stuckey could be a big help to the Hurricanes' defense. The 6'3, 300-pound Stuckey is a consensus three-star recruit.
Brad Kaaya, West Hilla (Ca.) Chaminade High School: Kaaya is a promising pro-style QB recruit with plus mobility. He is a consensus three-star recruit and held several BCS offers.
Nick Linder, Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas High School: Linder is the little brother of Brandon Linder, a starting guard for the Hurricanes. He's undersized at 6'1 and 265 pounds, and if he is ever to play at all for the Hurricanes, it will be many years down the road. However, the pedigree is something to like, and even if he doesn't start, he could prove to be valuable for depth purposes.
Top targets
Ermon Lane, Homestead (Fla.) High School: Lane is arguably the top receiver recruit in the country and is in Miami's backyard. This is a player Miami needs to sign.
Defensive tackles Khairi Clark and Travonte Valentine, of Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna and Palm Bay (Fla.) Bayside High School, respectively. Both are elite, high four-star defensive tackles. And both would have a very strong chance of starting or playing several hundred snaps as freshmen, as Miami's defensive tackle situation is dire. The Hurricanes are in strong position with Clark, and have a real shot at Valentine.
Chad Thomas, Miami (Fla.) Booker T. Washington High School: Thomas is a raw, long defensive end. A consensus four-star recruit at 6'4 and 230 pounds, he could help Miami with its defensive line issues.
Arrion Springs, San Antonio (TX) Roosevelt High School: Springs is a talented cornerback recruit. He likes Miami a lot, and at 5'11 and 192 pounds, the four-star would be a candidate for early playing time should he come to Coral Gables.
