Ethan Frith, a big offensive tackle recruit from Summit (Ms.) North Pike High School, committed to the Florida State Seminoles Friday.
"I'm committed," Frith said. "I feel at home at Florida State. I love the coaching and that's where I'm going."
Florida State was the first school to offer Frith, thanks to coach Tim Brewster, who used to recruit Frith's area while working for Mississippi State University. Frith is a three-star recruit, and FSU was his only offer for nearly three months until last week, when he performed well at the Mississippi State camp and earned an offer.
"I wanted to compete and show coach Jimbo that I was the real deal," Frith said. "I feel like I did good."
Since FSU offered in March, Frith has worked hard to drop his weight from about 320 to roughly 295, on his 6'7 frame. How? By cutting out Mountain Dew, fried foods, and running.
"My 40 has gotten faster, and I'm more agile," Frith said.
It made all the difference in the world. Built like a refrigerator box, Frith moved and performed much better than expected Friday at the Jimbo Fisher camp. After one dominating rep, head coach Jimbo Fisher shouted "that's big time" to the big tackle.
Frith spoke with the media after the camp, but before the commitment, and said that Florida State had the faith in him to offer so early. Frith's dad is also a former Marine, like Florida State's offensive line coach, Rick Trickett, and in speaking with his father, he said that he thinks Ethan appreciates a no-nonsense approach to coaching.
"He's tough, but I'm used to it, but he gets you better," Frith said. "The staff was really impressed and they want me here at Florida State."
Frith is the 12th commitment of the 2014 class for the Seminoles.
