Miami Nike Football Recruit Training Camp: Cornerbacks shine

$

The Miami Nike Camp brought out many top prospects Sunday. Eight were rewarded with trips to The Opening.

Defensive line

Much like on the offensive line, I did not see any obvious elite players on the defensive line. Ronique Robinson, a transfer to Miami (Fla.) Booker T. Washington, is one to watch. He has an excellent build and a basketball background, but he is quite raw.

Linebacker

Unlike the group in Orlando, the linebackers in Miami had much better length overall and higher ceilings.

Tevon Coney, of Palm Beach Gardens (Fla.), was the best of the bunch. He is a consensus three-star on 247Sports as of this writing, but I expect that to rise. He appears to be about 6'1, 220, but with long arms, good flexibility and athleticism. I was impressed. He recently received offers from Auburn and UCF.

Coney will see Florida this weekend and take in some spring practices. He named Florida, Miami, N.C. State, Tennessee and Ohio State as schools who are in regular contact. Coney grew up a Florida fan, but said that his fandom cannot play into his decision process. He has previously visited Miami and spoke well of the school.

Coney would also like to see Tennessee, Georgia and Michigan State over the summer.

Other talented linebackers were also in attendance.

Sh'Mar Kilby Lane, a four-star out of Hallandale (Fla.), has a great build at 6'2 and 210 pounds with length.

Kilby Lane wants to get bigger and stronger to get ready for the season. He recently took in FSU's junior day, and remembered that the national champions are a team that "works hard." He also said the three schools who "show him the most love" are Alabama, Ohio State and Florida State. He'll see Ohio State on April 12, and will visit Alabama the week after. Kilby Lane thinks he might commit after his senior season.

I was also impressed by the build of Dominic Sheppard, a three-star linebacker from Miami (Fla.) Gulliver Prep. He holds a Miami offer.

Defensive back

South Florida has long been the land of the defensive back, and Sunday provided plenty of elite players.

The best of the bunch was Tyrek Cole, a cornerback from Miramar (Fla.) High School. The Florida State commitment was extremely smooth in his transitions, effortlessly flipping his hips, showing good closing speed and contesting throws very well. He came down with two interceptions, earned the DB MVP and an invite to The Opening.

In this video interview, Cole says that he will visit Florida State and others soon. And he notes which schools will receive official visits.

Tarvarus McFadden, of Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) American Heritage School, was also excellent on the day. The uncommitted five-star has great size at 6'3, and he showed very good feet in drills -- always a question for anyone who is very tall and playing cornerback. McFadden earned an invite to The Opening at the conclusion of the camp. McFadden told me he wants to see LSU, Florida State, Georgia, Florida and maybe a few other schools during the spring or summer.

Calvin Brewton, of Miami Central, competed in his first event since shoulder surgery. The four-star Florida State safety commitment did well, and received an invite to The Opening.

Kendrell McFadden, a recent transfer to Miramar at safety, also earned an invite to The Opening. I did not expect this and did not consider him one of the elite players at the event. Other recruiting analysts were also surprised. It will be interesting to see how the West Virginia commitment matches up with the best recruits in the country.

Tyler Byrd, of Naples (Fla.), was a very impressive underclassman. The Florida Gators commitment was as physically impressive as any defensive back at the event, and though he was very grabby in coverage, he did well overall. Byrd was wearing a camouflage UF hat. He is undoubtedly one of the top 2016 prospects in the state.

Note: There were many excellent players at the camp and this review is not intended to be a complete, comprehensive rundown of every player who made a decent play on Sunday. These are just some who stood out, updated their recruitments or were otherwise noteworthy to our SB Nation Staff.

I've received several requests for a breakdown of Florida State's scholarship players by year of eligibility. After some tinkering with the format, this is the product on which we settled. Players are grouped by current scheduled graduating class. Florida State has not provided current scholarship information, but we believe this to be current and very accurate.

Florida State football pro day: NFL Draft workouts

$
0
0

Florida State players look to dominate the draft for a second consecutive year.

Florida State football hosts its Pro Day Tuesday in front of scouts from all 32 NFL teams. After sending 11 players to the NFL in the 2013 draft, Florida State followed up with a National Title, and is now set to send another large group. 19 scholarship players will work out, as well as eight walk-ons and seven former players.

Tomahawk Nation will have live coverage from the event via Dustin Tackett beginning at 10 EST, and I'll coordinate the site and social. ESPN3 will also carry some live coverage beginning at that time.

Receiver Kelvin Benjamin, and defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan will be looking to follow up on their combine performances and cement themselves as first-round draft choices.

Defensive backs Terrence Brooks and Lamarcus Joyner will be trying to show that they deserve to go in the top-60 or so draft picks. Brooks had an excellent combine, while Joyner's was so-so, though the latter did post an impressive arm length number relative to his short stature.

Linebackers Christian Jones and Telvin Smith also did well at the combine. Smith will want to convince scouts that he is truly a linebacker and not a safety, while Jones will want to post a great 10-yard split time to show his value as a pass rusher.

Running back Devonta Freeman had an excellent combine relative to expectations, showing that he was not slow. On the other hand, James Wilder Jr. had one of the worst combines of any player, posting awful times and looking generally unprepared. He'll try to have his redemption Tuesday.

Center Bryan Stork didn't work out at the combine, but did take part in interviews. He'll be working out for the first time.

Receiver Kenny Shaw will also be working out for the first time after failing to receive a combine invite. He'll need to post good speed times to be drafted, as he is not very muscled.

Other players who are not projected to be drafted by most mock drafts, but will be working out: FB Chad Abram, DB Gerald Demps, LS Phillip Doumar, OL Jacob Fehrenkrug, DL Demonte McAllister, DL Jacobbi McDaniel, TE Shane Broxsie, DE Dan Hicks, OL Jonathan Wallace.

Former players working out: LB Mister Alexander, WR Willie Haulstead, DL Moses McCray, TE Beau Reliford, DB Greg Reid, RB Debrale Smiley, OL Daniel Glauser.

Could shooting, theft incidents be reason Ira Denson is not with Florida State football team?

$

0

Denson was a recruit with great power, but injury, work ethic, and personal issues may be ending his time in Tallahassee prematurely.

Updated story

An Ira Denson was booked into the Leon County Jail on 3/18 for several theft crimes. There is no way of knowing that this Ira Denson is the same Ira Denson, who is not currently with FSU's football team, but FSU's Denson was accused of theft and admitted as much when interviewed by police in a related shooting. There is no photo listed.

Updated story 3/7

Details are officially emerging on the situation that in part caused Ira Denson to not be with the Seminoles. Jimbo Fisher discussed Denson Thursday.

"[He's] just going to school right now. We'll evaluate how he does and he has to continue to do well. We want him to do well academically. If he does, he does. If he doesn't, then we'll have to adjust to that."

The full story is here from the Democrat, and is complicated but the gist as it pertains to Florida State:  Denson allegedly stole a debit card from Mario Pender, Pender allegedly took a pair of Denson's shoes as collateral, Denson allegedly returned with another man to give Pender back his money and to retrieve his shoes, and after the exchange, the man who returned with Denson allegedly shot a man who was with Pender. That man, from Madison County (Denson's hometown) is charged with premeditated murder attempted murder (the Democrat's article first said premeditated murder).

Florida State has also told recruits it wants five or six offensive line recruits this cycle, which is one more than we projected, which could indicate that Denson is not coming back to the team.

Original story (January 10)

Florida State freshman guard Ira Denson has not had a great semester. Injured, very overweight, and in the doghouse for other issues, he did not make the trip to Pasadena, despite seemingly every other injured player making the trip.

When I saw that, it was a red flag. There are rumors of the latest transgression, but without documentation, I'm not comfortable publishing it because there are conflicting reports and details. I do know that the injury is not what kept him from making the trip.

Early Wednesday, Denson posted the instagram at right of him in a class, with the words 'ppl say. I got kicked out lol let dem tell it but I'm here bored lol I'm still good don't matter what y'all all say," followed by a ton of symbols that I cannot replicate on a laptop.

Last night, Denson had this twitter exchange with teammate Levonte "Kermit" Whitfield and others on twitter. Whitfield and Denson are close, and Denson did not get much of a response from his other teammates, which is a bit unusual for a player making some of the statements he did.

The non-denial to a fan wishing him good luck at his new school is also a bit telling. If Denson were staying, would he retweet that?

Florida State spring football: ESPN on campus as practice starts

ESPN will be on campus Wednesday to preview spring practice for the defending national champions. Florida State will take the field around 3:30 EST.

Jimbo Fisher and Jameis Winston will have press conferences at noon, and Tomahawk Nation will bring you live coverage of the event. We will also have streaming video on this page

Press conferences: Jimbo presser recap.

So far, we've previewed almost every aspect of the team entering spring.

-Linebackers preview: coming Wednesday

-More than just talent, FSU must replace big leaders (I know, I know, but it's true)

-Defensive backs: Who replaces Lamarcus Joyner and Terrence Brooks?

-Who will play center? What sort of depth is FSU working with on the offensive line?

-How can FSU avoid a major drop-off at wide receiver?

Jameis presser

-Even with Dalvin Cook's shoulder surgery, FSU is loaded at running back.

-FSU has major questions at defensive tackle.

-FSU's tight end situation looks better than ever.

-Can FSU improve at quarterback? Yes.

While no team should be expected to repeat, at this point in the year, this roster definitely suggests a team that should again be among college football's elite.

Derwin James recruit scouting report: Top safety

$
0
0

Derwin James is the best safety in the country.

Derwin James is considered one of the top secondary players in the nation in the class of 2015, and is receiving interest from top-tier programs across the United States. He claims offers from Florida State, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Miami and Ohio State, among others

James attends Auburndale (Fla.) Haines City Senior High School, and is considered one of the top prospects in the Sunshine State. He is projected to play safety at the next level by 247sports, Scout and ESPN, but Rivals lists him as an athlete who can play multiple positions.

The rising senior is listed at 6'2 and 201 pounds. As of March, He is considered a five-star prospect by 247sports and scout, and is given four stars by Rivals and ESPN. Combining the ratings of all four services together, he is a composite five-star. Rivals lists James as an athlete, but the other three services all place him No. 1 at his safety position nationally.

Note: This is a scouting report. Where a player is or is not committed is irrelevant. A player may change his commitment status several times before National Signing Day, but his skills likely won't change much. Omission of recruiting status is intentional.

He can be followed on Twitter @derwinjames6.

Derwin James is clearly the best safety in the country. Let's review why.

James has an excellent build for a safety, and he will likely play college football around 210 or 215 pounds.

James has very good speed for a safety. He has run in the 4.5 range, laser timed, and will likely do so again on his second trip to Nike's The Opening. He also has an excellent first step, using his acceleration to reach top speed very quickly. That allows him to close on the football extremely well. It appears offensive players underestimate James' speed, as he is on them, delivering a crushing blow, much quicker than they anticipate.

Speaking of hitting, James really brings the lumber. He explodes through his hips to level offensive players. He is perhaps over-aggressive at times, but he is so physically dominant in high school that he can get away with it.

James' film does not show a ton of pass coverage reps, but I can attest to his coverage skills, at least while playing 7-on-7, a format that does not involve any run defense. For the last two years, James has been either the first or second-best defensive back in every tournament he's entered. He has excellent vertical leaping ability, strong hands, and seems to track the ball well.

I've also seen James cover in man-to-man in camps, and he shows good hip fluidity for a safety.

James profiles as a multi-year starter at the BCS level and has all the makings of an NFL player. He might not be the most polished player at this point, but his tools are off the charts.

Torrance Gibson recruit scouting report: Can athlete become elite QB?

$
0
0

What do you need to know about one of the country's best dual-threat quarterbacks?

Torrance Gibson, of Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) American Heritage School, is one of the most intriguing prospects in the country. At 6'4 and 195 pounds, he immediately stands out from his peers.

In fact, he is — as of March — considered to be the top dual-threat quarterback in the country, period. Gibson has earned an early 5-star rating on the 247sports composite, and is the only player in that positional grouping to do so, although he has plenty of competition in hot pursuit. The 6'4 signal-caller also ranks fifth among recruits in Florida for 2015 — one of seven 5-star players in the Sunshine State — and 13th overall on the 247sports composite. ESPN rates him as an athlete, and it will be interesting to see if other recruiting services follow.

As of March 2014, he holds more than 20 scholarship offers, which include three from in-state powers Florida, Florida State and Miami. Big-time programs like Ohio State, LSU, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Penn State and Notre Dame also have offered.

But in evaluating Gibson, it is necessary to evaluate him as an athlete who could play receiver, and as a quarterback, because the quality of his skills in those two areas are very different.

As an athlete...

Gibson is a a freakish athlete. He ran a 21.7 in the Florida 200M finals at 6'4 and 195 pounds. He has tremendous top-end speed, and for a long-strider, he does have good acceleration and reaches top speed quickly. I have seen him dominate at receiver, leaving defenders in his dust, elevating to catch jump balls with a great vertical leap, and making circus catches.

I've also seen him drop some routine balls, and his route running is very raw, which is perhaps to be expected for a player who plays quarterback and not receiver for his high school. There is no doubt, however, that if Gibson were to dedicate himself to playing receiver, that he could be one of the best in the country and possess serious NFL potential.

As a quarterback...

There is no doubt that Gibson is an incredible high school quarterback. His highlights are amazing.

If I were a high school coach, I would use Gibson just as he is being used by American Heritage. He is basically unstoppable in high school, and especially so when he has a five-star running back (Sony Michel) and a four-star receiver (Isaiah McKenzie) with which to work. Gibson had 315 all-purpose yards in leading American Heritage to the 5A state title.

All of the athletic ability mentioned above — the speed, the acceleration, the change of direction, they all help Gibson at quarterback.

But for my money, Gibson is not a five-star quarterback prospect. He is a five-star athlete. Because of his legs, he may be a four-star quarterback, but at some point, every quarterback must throw, and that's where the questions begin for Gibson.

Gibson has a good, but not great arm. His motion needs to be completely reworked, as he has a long, loopy delivery and doesn't involve his body in his throws, leading to a lack of velocity on some, and inaccuracy on many others.

His highlight tape is almost all bubble screens, bombs to wide open receivers and scrambles. There is very little of Gibson throwing in rhythm, standing in the pocket, reading a defense and delivering accurately. He does seem to be more accurate throwing streaks and bombs, however, and that is something that can translate at the college level if he sticks at quarterback.

Gibson knows that he must look at spread schemes that will feature his running ability and lessen the burden on him to throw the football, offering more opportunities to throw off play-action and against single coverages.

But will those schemes develop him for the next level, or will they get caught up in using his incredible running ability over and over? That's a legitimate question. I believe Gibson's future is much brighter at receiver than it is at quarterback. While he is raw at receiver, I think it says a lot that he is even more raw at quarterback, having played QB throughout his high school career, and not receiver. He told me recently, however, that he is only considering playing quarterback in college, and does not listen to teams who tell him that he should also look at receiver. If he follows through with that plan, I think Gibson will need a developmental year or two before he can make an impact under center.

Gibson is a rare player with legitimate options to play multiple positions at different schools. It will be interesting to follow his recruitment and career.

Tyrek Cole recruit scouting report: Smooth cornerback

$
0
0

What makes Tyrek Cole so good?

Tyrek Cole is a cornerback recruit out of Miramar (Fla.). He checks in at 5'11.5 and 170 pounds.

As of March, he holds offers from more than 30 schools, including Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and others. He is rated as the No. 5 cornerback in the country by a composite of the four major services (247sports, Rivals, ESPN, Scout), and a top-75 player. The consensus four-star won the DB MVP at the Miami Nike Camp in March, and has been invited to The Opening in July.

Note: This is a scouting report. Where a player is or is not committed is irrelevant. A player may change his commitment status several times before National Signing Day, but his skills likely won't change much. Omission of recruiting status is intentional.

Cole can be found on twitter @Cole_Island

Why is Cole rated to highly? Let's take a look at his highlights.

Cole has adequate height. While he's not quite 6'0, he is a legit 5'11.5, as measured at multiple combines. He can pack on 15-20 pounds on his frame in a good strength and conditioning program.

Cole has good top-end speed. He is not the fastest recruit in the country, but he does have tremendous acceleration, able to play off-man and trail techniques, catching back up to the receiver effortlessly.

He also has very fluid hips, some of the best in his class. He doesn't take many false steps, either, and with his hips and acceleration, is able to easily mirror the best receivers in South Florida.

Cole also has a natural feel for the game, showing good recognition skills on tape. And his ball skills are very good. He comes down with his fair share of interceptions, and sometimes even peels off his man to cause a PBU on a ball intended for a different receiver. Cole has good vertical leaping skills, as well.

At 170 pounds, he is far from the best press player in the world. He is a very aggressive corner, but the strength is just not there at this point. Whether he becomes a better press corner in college as he adds muscle is an important question.

Cole is not the best tackler and that should improve if he works on his technique, and also as he adds good muscle mass in college.

Cole has the potential to be a multi-year starter at the BCS level and an NFL player.

Kahlil McKenzie recruit scouting report: Powerful defensive tackle

Scouting powerful defensive tackle recruit Kahlil McKenzie

Kahlil McKenzie is one of the top recruits in the country. He holds about 30 scholarship offers, including some of the top schools in the country. Out of Concord (Calif.) De La Salle, his list will only grow.

Scouting by Derrell Warren, West Coast Recruiting Analyst (@yssd)

McKenzie's film is available here.

McKenzie is a defensive line recruit who already possesses college-ready size. He has a massive trunk, and at 6'4" and 310 pounds he carries that weight well on an athletic, well-proportioned frame.

McKenzie profiles as an athletic disruptor/space eater who'll anchor the middle of a defensive line. He can set the table for others, but flashes the baseline skill set to anchor at the point of attack but penetrate into the backfield.

At the next level, McKenzie is a scheme diverse player. If a coach deemed it necessary, he could possibly bulk up a bit and play the 0 technique position, and two-gap in a traditional 3-4 "Okie" front. That said, a one-gap scheme would better allow him to make optimal use of his talents. Whether that be within either a 4-3 or 3-4 alignment.

As he develops, I would like to see McKenzie show a more consistent get-off. At times at times he can be a bit slow coming out of his stance. Granted, some of this may be function of his responsibilities on given snaps. At other times, he flashes impressive first step explosiveness for a man his size, and converts speed to power and disengaging from interior lineman.

Is at his best when activates his length and uses his tremendous leg drive to power to the ball through contact. He demonstrates good vision tracking the ball well in traffic.

McKenzie doesn't show the best lateral mobility. However, he flashes enough short-area quickness to cross the guard's face. Ultimately, not sure of how often we will see him making plays ranging outside the box. He's at his best operating b-gap to b-gap and getting upfield vertically.

It is my belief that McKenzie is likely a top-50-75 player nationally

Elite 11 Atlanta: Top quarterback recruits throw for chance at finals

$

The Atlanta stop of the Elite 11 should be a good one Friday, taking place at Gary Pirkle Park, in Sugar Hill, Ga. Some of the best quarterbacks from Georgia and the surrounding states will be participating. I've bolded some of the top-known competitors entering the event, and I'm sure more will also emerge.  In all, I recognize 26 who already hold FBS offers. The lists are sorted by alpha and by number for easier search.

Auburn commit Tyler Queen, of Kennesaw (Ga.) North Cobb High School is one of the most highly rated on the list. I've been told that he has slimmed down considerably since 2013, and I'll be looking to see if that pays off with more mobility.

The aptly named Jawon Pass, of Columbus (Ga.) Carver High School, holds more than 10 major offers and is probably the top underclassman expected.

Live updates will be available beginning at 4 p.m. EST in the comment section.

Underclassmen quarterback recruits steal show at Atlanta Elite 11

$

The rising seniors were good, but the class of 2016 was the story of the Elite 11 regional stop in Atlanta.

Friday brought many of the top passers from across the country to Atlanta for the Elite 11 quarterback recruit regional. While there were no super-elite of five-star prospects, the event more than made up for it with depth, as 30 quarterbacks could potentially end up playing football at the FBS level.

Youth rules the day

While there were plenty of decent-to-good FBS prospects in the 2015 class in attendance, the players with big-time potential were mostly found in the classes of 2016 and 2017. I spent a good part of my day focusing on the freshmen and sophomores who will surely make Atlanta a "must stop" on the Elite 11 over the next two years.

Austin Kendall, of Charlotte (NC) Christian, was very good on the day, and one of the best overall, regardless of class. The 6'2, 205-pound QB threw a great ball, and already holds offers from Clemson and Tennessee.

Stockton McGuire, of Fairburn (Ga.) Landmark Christian threw quite well, and as he fills out, I expect the 6'3, 165-pounder to pick up some FBS and BCS offers.

Jawon Pass, of Columbus (Ga.) Carver, was very good in a setting that didn't let him use his best attribute -- his legs. If he works on his passing and can get it to the level of his running, he'll be an even bigger prospect than he already is (Pass has multiple top offers).

Logan Byrd, of Kathleen (Ga.) Veterans, threw the ball with velocity and seems fairly polished, though a bit robotic at times. He is well built at 6'2, 215, and already holds a Duke offer.

Zerrick Cooper, of Jonesboro (Ga.) has a great build at 6'3 and about 200 pounds, and he's super athletic. His good was very good, but he is fairly raw and has a ways to go. He already holds offers from Kentucky and N.C. State, among others.

Rex Culpepper, of Tampa (Fla.) Plant, needs to work on loosening up his hips and his overall motion, but he has real potential to be an FBS player.

D.J. Vanderwerf, of Sweetwater (TN), threw the ball very well and was consistently on target.

Josh White, of Marietta (Ga.) Walton had a bit of an up-and-down day, but the tools are there. White is 6'5, 215 and has a good arm when he puts it together. His offer list should continue to grow in the next two years.

And Davis Mills, of Greater Atlanta Christian, is a member of the class of 2017, and certainly a name to watch. He threw the ball as well as some kids 20 months older than him.

Elite 11 Atlanta recap: Quarterback recruits landing offers from big schools

The depth at the Atlanta Elite 11 quarterback recruit regional was very good.

The Elite 11 Atlanta regional brought excellent young quarterback recruit talent, but the rising seniors in attendance also put on a good show. While there were no obvious five-star types, or even fringe five-stars, there was considerable depth, featuring numerous players who I believe will play in a major conference.

Anthony Ratliff had the best overall day. Out of Matthews (NC) Butler, Ratliff is a solid 6'0, 195 pounds, and throws a nice ball with good velocity. The recent UNC commit also fits that offense very well, as he can really move.

Austin King, of Alpharetta (Ga.) was also impressive. The local product from just down the road threw consistently well and has acceptable height at 6'2. King has some lower-level offers like Middle Tennessee State and UAB, and is also hearing from ACC schools like Wake Forest, Miami, N.C. State and Duke. King has already visited the North Carolina schools, along with UAB, and he soon plans to visit Middle Tennessee State and Georgia and make return visits to some of the schools in North Carolina. King would like to make a decision by the end of summer, and he is a candidate to pick up bigger offers as the spring evaluation period rolls on.

Ross Trail, of Wynne (AR), only has one major offer at the moment (Louisville), but the 6'3, 200-pounder had a solid day. He has a good, balanced approach, a nice motion and throws the ball well. I'd expect more offers to come.

Lorenzo Nunez, of of Kennesaw (Ga.) Harrison, had an up and down day. His good was very good, but he did not flash it often enough. Nunez is also a threat with his legs, and that doesn't show through as much in this setting, as the focus is on passing. Nunez holds offers from Ohio State, Clemson and other major schools.

Stevens gives the latest on his recruiting

Tommy Stevens, of indianapolis (IN) Decatur Central, is a well-known QB in the Midwest, and he performed very well on Friday. Stevens has a nice frame at 6'4, and a smooth, easy delivery without much tension. Several of the coaches on hand came away impressed. I spoke with Stevens after the event.

Kendall Hinton, of Durham (N.C.) Southern, is undersized at under 6'0, but also had a nice day and showed considerable improvement throughout the event, impressing Trent Dilfer and other coaches.

Nick Johns discusses his recruiting.

Nick Johns, of Washington (D.C) Gonzaga, had a very good day. Johns stood out immediately, with his 6'3, 215-pound build. Johns is a Penn State legacy, and currently holds three offers. As he indicates in the video, coaching stability is important for Johns. He wants to ensure that the offensive coaching staff will be intact throughout his time in college.

Ryan Willis, of Mission (Kansas) Bishop Miege, is a Kansas State legacy and a very good player. With a strong 6'3,195-pound build, Willis has clearly had some coaching and is fairly polished. His arm is good, but not great, and I was most impressed with his consistency as he put it on the mark time after time.

Alex Malzone, of Broomfield Hills (MI) Brother Rice, made the long trip and threw quite well. With his frame, it's easy to see why he has some interest from bigger schools. As more dominoes fall, he could pick up bigger offers.

Nick Tiano, of Chattanooga (Tenn.) Baylor School, was one of the better players at the event. Tiano has a nice build at 6'4, 230 pounds, but has a strange hitch in his delivery.

Ryan Adzima, of Wallington (NJ) also did well. I would expect him to pick up a few offers as the spring equation period continues.

Jameis Winston still owns Clemson

Clemson beat Florida State to open the baseball series in South Carolina Friday. But the dominant closer for the No. 1 Noles wasn't worried. After all, it's just Clemson.

On Saturday morning, he took to Twitter to remind everyone that FSU has always owned Clemson.

He drove Clemson's fanbase crazy with a picture of Clemson's Memorial Stadium and the following tweet:

Winston, of course, had a virtuoso performance in crushing Clemson in Death Valley before being pulled with a six-touchdown lead.

This caused quite the stir with Clemson players, as Travis Blanks, a Tallahassee native, responded and then deleted his Facebook response, and reserve offensive lineman Spencer Region responded with tweets like this one:

... and one implying Winston should be in prison.

Defensive end Shaq Lawson also followed up with a tweet.

As he's done throughout his career, though, Winston backed up the talk. After taking the first game of the double header, FSU roared back from a 3-0 deficit in the second game, and Winston recorded the final seven outs for a pressure-packed save. Full recap coming via our baseball guys, but Seminoles everywhere will enjoy Winston's final tweet leaving the stadium, and his teammates getting in on the act.

UPDATE:

Winston tweeted more overnight in response to the feedback he received for his earlier tweets.

As expected Clemson fans booed Winston during each plate appearance and relief appearance.

Not that it was necessary but he went on to apologize to whiny Tiger fans.

WR/TE/DB

The group of receivers, tight ends and defensive backs should be particularly good in Atlanta. Terry Godwin, a Georgia commitment, is a fantastic athlete on both sides of the football, as is Darius Slayton. Preston Williams, a Tennessee commitment, is considered by some to be the top receiver in the country, and Kevin Toliver, an LSU commitment, is considered the best cornerback in America by just about everyone.

The running back and linebackers group also isn't lacking. Taj Griffin of Powder Springs is a superstar athlete and will be a handful for most of the running backs to handle in this format. Ditto Eric Swinney of Sandy Springs.

Linebackers Roquan Smith, Adonis Thomas, Quarte Sapp and Brian Bell will look to match them step for step.
