Auburn no longer plans to retroactively win Florida State's 1993 National Title

Auburn is dropping its quest to retroactively claim national titles in years 1910, 1913, 1914, 1983, 1993 and 2004 after a year-long study. Instead, the Tigers will only recognize legitimate titles from 1957 and 2010.

Auburn's 1993 team was very good and went undefeated, beating two ranked teams by a combined 11 points.

Perhaps Auburn's study found that it was on probation and ineligible for the 1993 title (or even the SEC title) due to rampant cheating, paying players and NCAA rules violations?

The 1993 National Champion Seminoles played seven ranked teams, going 6-1 and outscoring them by 137 points.

This is an abrupt about-face from athletic director Jay Jacobs, who said the following on the day Auburn lost to Florida State at the 2014 Rose Bowl, the final BCS National Championship Game:

"I think we should go back and claim them," he said. "I think we should count our national championships just as our peers do."

"What you don't want to do is make somebody think you're making something up," Jacobs said. "But if other schools are claiming their championships, why shouldn't we claim ours?"

"Let's get them all championship rings," Jacobs said. "That's what I say. Why not?"

The recognized National Champion in 1993? Florida State. Apparently now, uncontested. An interesting historical note is that Jimbo Fisher was the quarterbacks coach of the 1993 Auburn Tigers.

While all this seems silly, Auburn likely started looking into the idea after their in-state rival Alabama elected to retroactively claim six additional, dubious titles.
