FSU Football Recruiting: Receiver Recruit Kermit Whitfield Commits

The commitment of receiver recruit Kermit Whitfield (full commitment story with scouting report) to the Florida State Seminoles Monday morning means that Florida State has added another blazing fast player to its roster. It also means that Florida State now has four receiver commitments and is still in pursuit of Stacy Coley.

In Should Florida State Take 5 Receiver Recruits In The 2013 Class?, I questioned whether taking five receiver recruits in the class was the smartest use of limited scholarship resources.

I also mentioned that this was a complicated decision there are many factors the coaching staff must consider when making the decision to accept a commitment from another receiver, most of which concern not 2013, but rather the 2014 season. They include:

But what if Rashad Greene or Kelvin Benjamin turn pro early? What if Marvin Bracy gives up football to run track professionally? What if any of the kids make dumb mistakes and are no longer around? What if someone gets hurt? What if one of the players coming in as a receiver is actually going to play cornerback?

Does the staff know or suspect that one or more of those things is likely to occur? I don't know, but I suspect as much. The staff is unlikely to comment on any of these issues or recruiting in general.

Ultimately, I do not think accepting Whitfield's commitment is a bad move, both because of circumstance and because Whitfield has improved a lot over the summer, including showing out at the Gridiron Kings event.

Florida State is currently at 18 commitments and could take as many as 30 in the class, though that is not necessarily expected.
