Dwight Williams is a highly rated outside linebacker recruit from Gardena (Calif.) Junipero Serra High School. He's receiving high interest from programs from across the country, not just along the West Coast. He's also the high school teammate of five-star cornerback Adoree' Jackson.
Williams stands 6'1, and weighs in at 205 pounds. He's a consensus four-star recruit between 247, Rivals, Scout and ESPN. He's rated among the top 10 outside linebacker recruits in the entire country by 247, Rivals and Scout, and is ranked around 100 in terms of all national prospects.
As of late April, Williams has an impressive list of scholarship offers. His list includes Florida, Miami, Michigan, Oklahoma, UCLA, Washington, Clemson, Georgia, Michigan State, and Oklahoma State, amongst a long list of others.
Derrell Warren, West Coast Recruiting Analyst: Gardena (CA) Serra linebacker Dwight Williams is a 6'1, 210-pound four-star prospect who's coming off a huge season in which he registered 158 tackles and three interceptions. He's added some good weight since the end of his junior season, somewhat calming concerns about how he projects size-wise.
Although Williams primarily plays inside linebacker for his high school team, he projects better operating outside than as an interior thumper; however, he flashes impressive burst coming downhill through the A-gap. A speed 'backer, the Gardena product is best running down plays in space and is an excellent tackler who squares up to the ball carrier and doesn't give up yards after contact. Eliminating those "hidden" yards is something coaches love as it is the difference in a defender making an actual "plus" play and keeping the offense off schedule from a down and distance perspective.
Williams navigates well through the trash close to the line of scrimmage but will need to do a better job of extending into contact and slipping blockers at the college level. At this point, he has a tendency to get hung up on blocks at times due to his lack of size and allowing linemen to get into his frame.
In coverage, Williams flashes great range as he often comes off the far hash to make plays in space to defend wheel and flat routes and gets great depth in his drops. Although there's not a ton of film of him matched up in 1-on-1 coverage, the interceptions on his tape often show him reaching away from his frame in order to make a play on the ball. When blitzing, Williams is used primarily to attack the A-gaps. He has the footwork and change of direction ability to be an effective edge blitzer as well.
