Defensive end Da'Shawn Hand is one of the top recruits in the country. Out of Woodbridge (Va.) High School, Hand holds more than 40 scholarship offers, and is a consensus five-star recruit.
Hand is trying to become one of the only players ever to be invited to Nike's The Opening twice. Last year, he was one of a handful of rising juniors to attend. He'll have his chance Sunday afternoon at the Nike Football Training Camp in Columbus, Oh.
"I'm just trying to go back to The Opening," Hand said. "I feel really good and I'm ready to get out here and work. I am 260 at 6'5 or 6'6, and have 10-percent body fat."
With the NFTC on the Ohio State campus, Hand took the opportunity and made an unofficial visit to the Buckeyes, along with friend Tim Settle, one of the top players in the class of 2015.
"It was straight, we talked," Hand said. "But I was with Tim, and he's a beast, and it was kind of his visit. Everyone knows that my first visit wasn't all that, but this visit was better. Still, I don't want to get anyone's hopes up."
Two schools running neck and neck in Hand's recruitment are Virginia Tech and Michigan.
"Bud Foster is my favorite coach, but I haven't talked with him in a while," Hand said.
"But my favorite coaching staff is Michigan," Hand said. "With Michigan, what you see if what you get. It's professional. With some, you feel like when you get to college it might change, but with Michigan, everyone says they're straight.
Other coaching staffs will get a chance to impress Hand over the summer as he takes some visits and competes at camps.
"I'm going to Florida, and will probably try to get out to USC," Hand said of planned unofficial visits. He may take more as well.
Hand isn't sure on a timetable for his commitment.
"I really don't know," Hand said. "Some days I feel like committing right then, and other days I want to wait. I don't know."
