Friday did not offer any photo finishes in the class 5A and 7A Florida high school football finals, but plenty of talent was on hand for the winning teams. After, they spoke about their recruitment.
Dwyer
The Panthers blasted Niceville 55-39 behind a balanced air and ground attack.
Dixon knows his decision
Johnnie Dixon had a solid night, with five catches for 55 yards and a touchdown. The four-star receiver also played solid defensive back. Dixon is down to Ohio State, Alabama and Miami. After the game, he spoke with SB Nation about his decision, which will be coming soon.
"I know where I am going, but nobody else does," Dixon said with a smile, making sure not to reveal his choice. Dixon said that he has known where he is going for a while. The factors for Dixon? He'll go where his heart leads him and where he feels the most comfortable.
Dixon said that he will have to sit down with his mom and make the call.
Last weekend, Dixon went on his official visit to see the University of Miami. Earlier in the week, Dixon was visited by Urban Meyer, of Ohio State. Meyer made sure to focus on early playing time and education. Dixon said that education is very important to him and his mom. Dixon wore an Ohio State hat before the game, but told me that it didn't mean anything regarding his upcoming decision.
Shawn Boone
Three-star safety Shawn Boone also had a very solid game for Dwyer, with a few pass breakups. I spoke with him about his recruitment, and Boone told me that he has a top group of Arkansas, Maryland, Penn State and N.C. State, but he is mostly focused on the latter two schools.
Boone has visited all four schools, and has received in-home visits from them as well. Unlike Dixon, who is an early enrollee, Boone will be a summer enrollee. He said he needs to consult with his parents before making a decision.
Boone cited the great atmosphere of both Penn State and N.C. State. Former Dwyer quarterback Jacoby Brisset, now at N.C. State, is pushing him a bit to the Wolfpack.
American Heritage
The Patriots dominated Clay 66-8 in one of the largest wins in the history of the state finals.
Edgar Cerenord
Three-star linemen Edgar Cerenord had a good day for the Patriots. He is a bit undersized at 6'0 and about 290 pounds, but has oversized arms, and a solid motor. He is still hearing from Wake Forest, Purdue and Duke a lot. Cerenord also mentioned Tennessee and Arkansas, but I question if he is a take for Tennessee at this time, given the lack of space in the Volunteers' class.
Sony Michel
Five-star running back Sony Michel told me that he is solid on Georgia, will not take other visits, and is also recruiting other South Florida players to play with him in Athens.
Tarvarus McFadden and Torrance Gibson
Five-star quarterback Torrance Gibson stole the show through the air and on the ground. He told ESPN ($) that three are standing out at this very early point in the process:
"I'd say Ohio State, Miami and LSU are standing out right now," Gibson said. "They all have great coaches, Al Golden, Urban Meyer -- he's a great coach, and I can't wait to go up to Ohio State."
McFadden, a four or five-star cornerback (some ratings are still to be released) says he is hearing the most from Florida State, LSU and Georgia.
Neither prospect plans to announce any time soon.
