Green Cove Springs (Fla.) Clay High School had a magical run though the 5A Florida playoffs, including wins by scores of 74-73, 9-7 and 40-38.
But on Friday in the old Citrus Bowl, the magic ran out, as Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage blasted the Blue Devils by a score of 66-8.
Torrance Gibson, one of the top rated players in the class of 2015, had an incredible game for the Patriots. He completed 9 of 10 passes for 161 yards with two touchdowns. And he added 154 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries -- many of them highlight runs. Gibson is hearing from a host of major schools, including Ohio State.
Most of Gibson's passes were safe throws, including four to speedster Isaiah McKenzie -- a Notre Dame commitment. On the day, McKenzie caught four passes for 88 yards, including a 49-yard touchdown.
Five-star running back Sony Michel capped a fantastic career for American Heritage with a solid game. On the day, the future Georgia Bulldog had 13 carries for 98 yards and three touchdowns. His long run on the day was for 29 yards, and he was largely effective despite Clay keying on him for much of the game. The Patriots called time out in the third quarter to remove him from the game, allowing for a large standing ovation from the American Heritage fans. After, Michel indicated that he was trying to recruit other elite players with him to Georgia.
Cornerback Tarvarus McFadden, one of the elite defensive backs in the class of 2015, shut down his side of the field and returned a kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown. McFadden is hearing from Florida State, LSU and Georgia, among others. At 6'3 and 195 pounds, he'll soon have any offer he wants.
One future bright spot for Clay is Colin Wilson, a 6'0, 205-pound freshman who has the look of a future star. I suspect his eventual position will depend on his continued growth.
