Coveted defensive back Quincy Wilson announced his commitment to Florida Monday, ending months of speculation over where the Fort Lauderdale-based prospect would land. Wilson's commitment came on the same day as those from wide receiver Ermon Lane and cornerback/athlete Chris Lammons, all three Florida-based recruits headed to Gainesville.
Wilson is a consensus four-star recruit, receiving high grades from Rivals and ESPN. Both Scout and 247 project Wilson as a three-star prospect. While the 6'2, 195-lb. Wilson is destined for the defensive backfield, his eventual position is a matter of some dispute. Rivals sees Wilson at cornerback, 247 and ESPN project him at safety, and Scout hedges its bet by choosing both positions. I think finding the right defensive fit is very important for Wilson:
Wilson is a tricky evaluation because I don't know what position he will play in college. He is the son of former Miami Hurricane cornerback Chad Wilson, and plays cornerback in high school. But here is where it gets tricky: Wilson is 6'2 and looks to be at least 200 pounds. And he is probably not done growing. He excels at press coverage and really bullies receiver at the line of scrimmage, sometimes even driving them back behind the line. But Wilson does not have the same speed or lateral agility as other elite cornerback recruits. And he doesn't look all that natural at cornerback.
Playing cornerback is very important to Wilson, and he did not consider schools who wanted him to play safety.
Wilson held one of the nation's longest offer sheets, with 50 reported scholarship offers, including nearly the entire SEC (only Alabama and Kentucky did not extend an offer), USC, UCLA, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan, Louisville, NC State, and Clemson.
